International Holocaust Remembrance Day

On 1st of November 2005, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a resolution that claimed 27th of January as the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. On that very day in 1945 the Soviet Army liberated the prisoners of the largest Nazi death camp “Auschwitz-Birkenau”.

A ceremony to commemorate the Holocaust victims will be held in Lviv on 27th of January 2015 at 11 a.m. on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the prisoners’ liberation.

The organizers of the event are:

- Holocaust International Centre named after Dr. A. Schwartz;
- Lviv Regional Charitable Organization “Bnei Brit ‘Leopolis” named after E. Domberher;
- Ukrainian Jewish Charity Foundation “Hesed-Arieh”;
- With the assistance of Lviv Regional State Administration and the Honorary Consulate of Israel in Lviv.

The program of the event:

11.00. - Mourning meeting, laying of wreaths and flowers, communal interfaith prayer for the victims near the monument of Lviv’s ghetto victims (Viacheslav Chornovil str.);
12.00. – Mourning meeting, laying of wreaths and flowers, communal interfaith prayer for the victims of the Valley of Death of Yanovsky concentration camp (Shevchenko str., 134 Yanivska str.);
13.30-15.00 - Round table “Remembering the past for the future’s sake” (Center for Urban History of West Central Europe, 6 Bohomoltsia str.);
19.00-20.30 - Commemorative concert-requiem (Lviv Regional Philharmonic, 7 Chaikovskoho str.).

Participants of the event are: Oleg Synyutka, the Head of Lviv Regional State Administration, Andriy Sadovy, Lviv City Mayor, Oleg Vyshniakov, the Honorary Consul of the State of Israel in Ukraine, Yitzhak Carmel Kagan, Deputy Israeli ambassador, MPs representatives, lawmakers of Lviv regional and city councils, clergy of various denominations, representatives of diplomatic missions, national and cultural associations, mass media and all concerned to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust.
